Sooooo, Lynn had to study for MCAT, Caroline had some letter writing, and I had a bookmark to design. No excuse for spending saturday night alone. Lynn cooked an amazing meal and we gathered after in the study room to get busy on our tasks. Finished an hour later with icecream, and burbon stewed strawberries. :)

For several months I've been on the hunt for a new table. As Bible Study has grown (praise Jesus!) So has the need for more space. We love each other of course but squeezing 12 of us around a 4 man table was getting to be tight. After looking and not finding, I looked into how much it would cost to have one made. The builder suggested I try and find a used table to suit my needs as well as my price range. I'd prayed that the Lord would provide a table that would be just right and within the budget. I jumped on craigslist just as soon as I finished talking with him and low and behold. The exact table I had pictured in my mind--style as well as shape and color. And guess what? Yep, it was exactly the price that was in my budget. It gets even better. The table was brand spankin' new! AND it was the EXACT size I'd measured to fit within my living room. It also has leaves to enlarge it.
But fret. How would I get it to my house? It's so large and I don't have a truck. WELL, yet another answered prayer: the kind couple who sold it to me delivered it!!! WOW. God will provide. Quite a kiss today from Him. What sweet grace. What a sweet and mighty God we know :) My prayer is that He would be glorified through our new table and He would feed us at it daily :)

one package of dates (I'll have one package for friday night, one package for saturday night,... :)
one package of goat cheese crumbles
one package of bacon
one package of pecans--1/2 cup (you can substitute almonds)

wrap 1/2 strip of bacon around each date, place in oven on 400 until bacon is crispy done
sprinkle with cheese and toasted nuts (toast over stovetop in butter while dates are baking)
toss and serve warm.

Here's something I've been curious about ever since my exhaust hose came loose this summer, yep, it was hot! But with cold weather and drying heaters, unhooking that hose on purpose to direct moisture and warmth back into the home could be used as an advantage:

Reclaiming Dryer Heat

"There are devices to direct warm dryer air back into your house, but they must only be used with electric dryers. Gas-fired dryers must exhaust outdoors to be safe. But in the case of electric models, the potential savings are even greater than you might think when you realize that the process eliminates the need to heat up all the air that must leak back into your house to replace the dryer air exhausted outside. You save twice. There are several heat recovery devices available through major hardware retailers, and the ones I've seen use water to filter out the lint. If you don’t see anything on store shelves, ask what can be ordered. The proposition is attractive, except for one thing: added moisture from all those wet clothes isn’t good in all homes. If you live in an old, drafty house, this isn’t a problem because any additional moisture finds its way outside automatically via cracks, gaps and other sources of air leakage. And if your house is tight but you have some form of mechanical ventilation -- like a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) -- this solves the moisture problem, too. But directing dryer air back into your house isn’t a good idea if more than a little condensation now appears on your windows during cold weather. This indicates moisture levels that are already verging on excessive. Adding more can promote mould growth and deterioration."

Animal House Party 2

Last night, the Mississippi Museum of Art hosted an annual gala for CARA, a no-kill animal shelter. Architecture firms and contractors teamed together to design and build 9 dog homes which were auctioned off at the live auction the night of the event. Hot dogs were served and the Fabulous Earth Angels were rockin'. It was a fun night and all of the money raised from the live and silent auction, and ticket sales will help CARA renovate their existing facility.

I hiccup one loud obnoxious time after a meal or if I'm hungry...as does my dad and my sister,

successfully removed the braces from my teeth in first grade with mom's mirror and dad's pliers...and begrudgingly had them put back on the next night by a woman named Fonda, in a trans am at a gas station parking lot at 930pm,

did the layout for George Bush's 80th birthday invitation,
have had an unbelievable survival rate with major car accidents (been through 8 different cars to date...) and a rip tide.

Fall Books!!!

It's time for a new book list for fall:

1) MERE CHRISTIANITY It's time to re-read it. One of the most influential books I've read. I read it my senior year of high-school and bought seven copies to give to my friends. so so good. I'm looking forward to re-reading it.

2) CHRONICLES OF NARNIA This is something I should have read already, but couldn't get in to before. I'm getting so lost in reading them now. They are great!

3) THE SHACK I grabbed this sort of as an impulse buy. It came recommended. I may read this now, or save it until I'm "more mature".

4) BEACH MUSIC It was from the summer reading list, and I didn't get to it...got distracted by Narnia.

5) A PASSION FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE The Life of Lilias Trotter. I can't wait to get started on this one.

A new coffee shop has arrived in the hood, and with it, another place for my favorite Saturday ritual: read and sip, look up occasionally to contemplate, and say hello to a familiar passers by.
Sometimes, I get the uncanny, paranoid sensation like Will Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, that I'm in a movie that's sort of a combination of already written parts mixed with alternate parts for choosing. Hold on, let me explain before we go down the road of self diagnosis, consider this for a moment: During the day, very often, I yell out, "Synchronicity!" Not like a nervous outburst, like "Fire!" or the obnoxious and loud pre/post lunch hiccup that echoes through our building matched with a jolly reply through the wall, "Hey Crystal!"
It's just a yell in my mind. And, some days, it's all day long. Answering my existence like the pool game where you close your eyes and yell, "Marco" while the person who's "it" yells back, "Polo" in order for you to hear where they are and tag them.
SO, I'm drinking coffee, reading, and look up to see Byron squeezing drops of honey from one of those restaurant squeeze bottles they use for ketchup and mustard and honey, into the musician's mouth, back onto his throat. He had stopped by to play a few songs before the show last night, the fundraiser for Heather, and his voice was losing, so he'd asked for some honey and Byron had delivered. It was a good image in the sun, the rays, honey drops falling from Byron's squeeze bottle, a young musician with his guitar round his neck and his foot on a tambourine. So, I looked back down to carry on reading page 103 of C.S. Lewis, Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, and immediately without a single half of a moment of hesitation my eyes went directly to the words on the opposite page that read, "a few drops of this will restore you." It's the part where Father Christmas gives Lucy her gift. It's a cordial made of the healing juice of one of the fire-flowers that grow in the mountins of the sun and the dagger to defend herself in great need. I know it's not good to focus on oneself too much...it can become a thirst that will never be quenched. But, it does make me wonder why I hear a lyric on the radio and within a moment, catch a road sign or board with the same word in it. Or, think of a friend I haven't thought of in years, and run into them at the grocery store the very next day.

I'm still an ENTP. I took this same personality test as a requirement by my boss in Houston 4 or so years ago. Unfortunately, she seemed a bit disappointed with the results...She's an ISFJ (Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging) and according to the test, they aren't the best bosses. ENTPs are, however ;)
I always thought the test was wrong when I took it in Houston, but I took it again tonight, and it's the same. I still think it's inaccurate. Your best friend should help you take it.

I heard this quote from a friend who was quoting a friend. It's beautiful to me. The connection of God's people to the world and the relationship of the Holy Spirit working in the life of those he has called unto himself.
In assisting the 3 year olds in Sunday school class this year, I have learned just as much if not more than the children have in our lessons. Having no previous experience in teaching children, of course the question of indoctrination came to mind when it was time for them to memorize the Bible verse. Asking the kids to repeat after me and along with me, "In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth..." It is kind of scary, to look down and see 8 bright little faces following you. During the lesson I thought, "Am I sure I'm teaching the kids Truth?... they're too young to think it out and decide...but if they aren't taught, how will they know?" and so on. Letting the thoughts surface, and then feeling the pleasure and comfort of seeing God's Truth all around.
This week in church, I thought about our blindness, and also our deafness, our muteness, our inability to see, until Christ begins to work in us. In college, my painting teacher, Jeff, was always full of good wisdom. In response to my question, "Do I paint what I see or what I know?" Jeff answered, "Both". And, I think so too in Christ, we learn, then we see, then we learn some more, he shows us his Truth, then we begin to see that too. As I was painting a still life, I didn't see other colors in the bright white highlight, like warm yellows and golds, or the deep purple and blue in the shadow, until I was told they were there. Now, I don't know how I could have missed all the colors right there in front of me. So, in painting we are taught to constantly go back and forth between what we see and what we know, what we see, then what we know, we question what we see and line it up with what we know, then take what we know and begin to see it, back and forth, back and forth, each enlightening and informing the other. I know this sounds good and idealistic, and the struggle is way more messy than this illustration. But, the sweetness of God's mercy is perfect, and he has given his Word to tell us about himself, and his Holy Spirit to cause us to see.

The week's theme seems to have been the 10 commandments. I've noticed a reference to them at least 4 times this week. The 4th being Ms. Burns at the coffee shop this morning, when she quoted the 5th commandment, "Honor your father and mother, that your days may be longer...". Below is the scripture given to us from God:

Fig preserves!

One way you can make fig preserves:
1) Pick figs that are soft and squishy. The nectar may squish out of the top as you twist them from the stem. This means they are ready.

2) Wash them. Cut the top off and slice halfway.

3) Melt 1/2 cup of sugar for every cup of figs, into a small amount of water over heat. Add figs. Cover and cook, stirring often for 2 hours or until ready.

4) Boil a jar and lid. Fill with the cooked figs and seal. There will probably be some syrup left in the bottom of the pan. You can be creative on how to use this leftover goodness. Some ideas: Use as syrup over cornmeal pancakes, put in a dutch oven with pork, pour over raisin cinnamon bread and sprinkle with feta cheese...

"Yesterday I was talking with a good friend on the phone about "less than ideal" circumstances. At this point in my life, I feel like my circumstances really have a hold on me--not allowing me to reach or achieve my "ideals". While I know full well God works in imperfect situations, after awhile, the battle gets hard, and I am exhausted.
My sweet friend reminded me of Jesus' birth: how He was prophesied to be born in Bethlehem since the beginning of time, how Mary endured labor on a donkey, and when they got to the town where the King of Kings was prohesised to be born, there was no room for them in the freaking inn! (pardon my language.) Wouldn't you think God would prepare a nice, cushy spot for His own Son to be born? At the very least, wouldn't you expect a measly room to stay in and labor in?
But no.
Mary gave birth to the Son of God in a dirty smelly stable.
All circumstances were seemingly against them.
All ideals out the window.
Things were not perfect.
But God showed up. Oh yes He did.

This post is going to be part of a series of posts I hope to write in the future about becoming a "Recovering Idealist". While ideals are great and good, they are often not what God has in mind. When we let those ideals get in the way of the life God has planned, then they become idols. I don't want to let go of my ideals, merely let God work in the imperfect circumstances, and thank Him for it.
